Born in Mecca, childhood at Arabia and studies at Kairo, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad came to India and settled in Calcutta. He was the editor of Urdu weekly Al-Hilal. He was imprisoned along with Deshbanshu C. R. Das in 1921-22. Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was President (Special Session) of Indian National Congress at Delhi in 1923. He suffered imprisonment several times in connection with Salt Sathyagraha. Maulana Azad was acting President of Congress in 1950. He was President, Indian National Congress, Ramgarh, 1940 and continued up to death on February 22, 1958.
